Discover Strangford Lough’s Rich Past: Kayak Adventure with Monks, Vikings, and Smugglers

Location: Whiterock – Nendrum, Strangford Lough

Embark on an award-winning kayak journey across Strangford Lough to Mahee Island, tracing the ancient routes of smugglers like Daft Eddie and the Merry Hearts. This unique experience begins at Whiterock, where participants will gear up with wetsuits and buoyancy aids under the guidance of local expert Rory Martin, a seasoned kayaker with deep roots in the area.

Navigate through history with Dr. Sarah Baccianti, a medieval Scandinavia scholar, as she unveils the mysteries of Nendrum’s monastic ruins, detailing the monastery’s life and the Vikings’ influence from the 9th to 11th centuries. On March 18th, linguist Dr. Frances Kane explores the fascinating origins of local place names, enriching your adventure with tales of the past.

This event, set against the backdrop of Strangford Lough’s stunning scenery, aims to safely reintroduce group activities in the post-Covid era, combining physical activity with cultural immersion.
